Artwork Specifications- Media, size etc

Commission

A commission of 35% is payable to Paint Ontario for each piece sold. The commission for a sale will be payable to the Grand Bend Art Centre as soon as the piece has been accepted into the show, whether the piece is displayed or not.

Originality

  • All work must be original.
  • No copies from other artists or from published material, including stock photography, no supervised work, no reproductions or prints, will be allowed. All artwork and reference material, including photographs, must be the original work of the artist and may be requested by jurors.
  • No repeat entries to Paint Ontario. Do not submit entries from previous years.
  • Works received after acceptance, that do not match the submitted digital image or meet the expectations and standards of the show, will not be displayed.

Pricing

  • All work must be for sale.
  • The minimum price for hung artwork is $200 and the maximum price for a painting is $4,500. For Example: 12” x 12” ranges from $300 to $500.
  • Sculptures must be priced between $200 and $7,500.
  • Your painting or sculpture may not be accepted into the show based on price point related to size or salability.
  • The sale price you enter on the entry form must include the commission payable to Paint Ontario (35%) and any HST that you, the artist, must pay. In other words, the Grand Bend Art Centre will take the commission off the price you submit for the piece.

Framing and Hanging

To be accepted, all work must be properly wired and ready to hang. No saw tooth hangers. We will not be repairing or accepting works that are not ready to hang. Framing: We welcome framed and unframed works, simple is best. With a wide range of subject matters we strive for excellence and visual continuity when hanging the show.

If the work is designed to hang unframed, the sides must be painted for a tailored, finished look and canvas wrapped pieces must have a depth of no less than 1.5 inches. We will not hang canvas wrapped pieces with only a 1 inch depth, cardboard flat canvas or ‘dollar store’ canvas.

Works will be inspected on delivery and must not be dented or scratched – a note and photo will be taken. The curator will make the final decision on whether a piece can be hung. If they are damaged on our end we will repair them. We are not responsible for keeping your packaging unless your work is shipped to us and needs to be shipped back.

When a work is rejected because of any of the above, entry fees will not be refunded. Please take care to follow these specifications.

Depicting People or Animals

  • If a person is depicted in your artwork, you must have the permission of the person you have painted. Please do not submit your work unless you have confirmed this and can demonstrate it to us if asked.
  • Animal paintings done in a “Pet Portrait” style will not be accepted.
  • Please ensure your subject matter is appropriate for the themes and imagery we are looking for.

What We are Looking For: Themes & Imagery

Paint Ontario 2025 will feature a mix of figurative landscapes, still lifes, and sculptures that highlight the rich tapestry of Ontario. With a focus on capturing the essence of everyday experiences, the artist brings a fresh perspective to familiar scenes, celebrating the beauty and diversity of the province.

Paint Ontario is a “representational show”. The heart of the show remains representational yet this has a broad definition. We choose to use the most encompassing definition to provide a variety of work for purchase and help to include more artists. This ranges from realism, impressionism, and contemporary to figurative. Subject matter ranges from still life, people and figures, wildlife, landscape, florals, gardens, urban or rural scenes, boats, or waterscapes reflecting Life in ONTARIO.

Figurative work will replace the portrait category. The work must be more than a head and shoulders composition and will be within a setting.

Paint Ontario invites work created by artists from Ontario and around the world.

NOTE: Abstracts, fantasy, science fiction, pet portraits, furniture, photography, computer art are excluded from consideration for this show.

We are looking for works in oil, watercolour, pastel, acrylic, pencil, charcoal, mixed media, and encaustic. Sculptures may be metal, wood, glass, clay, stone and mixed media. See Artwork Specifications
