Paint Ontario 2019 was a huge success – many talented artists submitted paintings to the show and sale. Last year’s show awarded over $7,000 in prizes. The show attracted a record number of visitors from all over Southern Ontario and beyond and generated record sales. Everyone was amazed and delighted with the beauty of the art that you, our artists, created.

Online entry to Paint Ontario will open February 27, 2020.

Opening Night for the show is March 29 and the show will run 7 days a week up to April 20. There are more than $7,000 in prizes, this is the show to enter!

Paint Ontario is an opportunity to sell both your painting and yourself as an artist. Visitors to Paint Ontario come from all over South-Western Ontario. Many of our artists have gone on to do commission and referred work based on their Paint Ontario showings at the Lambton Heritage Museum. Don’t forget to send us an Artist Bio – see below.

Paint Ontario is a show within a show, the Faces and Places of Ontario, and has workshops by artists for artists. The Places of Ontario show features original paintings that bring to life the beauty, character and diversity of Ontario – our home. The Faces of Ontario show features original paintings that depict the faces and convey the story of one or two people in an Ontario theme.

Two Juried Categories

  1. The Places of Ontario is a juried competition for “representational” art,  We seek paintings that depict the diversity of the Ontario landscape, architecture, flora and fauna, waterscapes, and urbanscapes. This is the default entry for the show.
  2. The Faces of Ontario showcases juried portrait style paintings that realistically depict people. The focus is on the face however a Paint Ontario setting or context is an asset.

Terms and Conditions for Entry.

    1. All entry forms to the show are completed onlineContact us if this is not possible. You may enter up to 3 pieces. Depending on the category there are options to submit by digital image upload or directly to the museum.
    2. Media can be oil, watercolour, pastel, acrylic, pencil, charcoal, mixed media encaustic; no sculpture, photography, computer art or textile art.
    3. Total outside dimensions, including frame, must be between 8”x10” and 36”x48”.
    4. All work must be original. No copies from other artists or from published material, including stock photography, no supervised work, no reproductions or prints, will be allowed. All painting and reference material, including photographs, must be the original work of the artist and may be requested by jurors.
    5. No repeat entries.
    6. All work must be for sale. The minimum is $200 and the maximum price for a painting is $4,000.
      Your painting may not be accepted based on price point related to size or saleability.
    7. The Artwork’s Price. The price you enter on the entry form must include the commission payable to Paint Ontario(35%) and any HST that you, the artist, must pay from the amount we pay you after we have taken the commission payable to Paint Ontario.
    8. To be accepted, all work must be ready to hang.
      This means framed, unless the work is designed to hang unframed. If the latter, the sides must be painted for a tailored, finished look. The piece must be properly wired.
    9. By signing the Exhibit Labels, you give the Grand Bend Art Centre consent to use the uploaded image(or image we create of your work) to advertise and promote Paint Ontario. This includes, but is not limited to, posting the winning artwork and examples of artwork we are looking for in our email notifications and on our advertising, websites and social media pages.
    10. Entering this competition automatically constitutes your acceptance of all published rules and these terms and conditions. Further; Paint Ontario and Lambton Heritage Museum shall not be responsible for loss of or damage to any artwork, no matter what the cause.
    11. Fees and Commissions: 
      1. The entry fee for entering online is $25 and includes the first work entered. The second and third pieces are $10 each.
        Fees are non-refundable.
        Not entering online is more expensive. The cost for not entering online will be provided when we are contacted.
      2. A sales commission of 35% is payable to Paint Ontario. See 7 above.
    12. The Places of Ontario Category
      1. The majority of the paintings are submitted in this category. Entries default to this category. If submitting a Faces of Ontario portrait see 13.
      2. Animal paintings done in a Portrait style without an Ontario setting or context will not be accepted.
    13. The Faces of Ontario Category
      1. Entry to this category must be by digital image upload and paid for online.
      2. You must select this category when entering online or it defaults to the Places of Ontario category. To enter this category choose it when completing the online entry form for each artwork entered.
      3. You must have the permission of the person you have painted. Please do not submit your work unless you have confirmed this and can demonstrate it to us if asked.
    14. Entry Emails.
      1. There are 2 emails sent with a successful submission.
        1. Entry Form. You must bring a printed copy of the Entry Form when delivering artwork to the museum. You will use the Security Login Code provided on the Entry Form to access your Acceptance Notification.
        2. The Exhibit Labels.The correct Exhibit Label must be attached to your artwork.
          Pieces not having the emailed Exhibit Label properly attached will not be accepted. The Exhibit Label must be securely attached to the back of the work, not draped around the wire.
      2. If you do not receive these emails immediately after entry (check your spam folder) you must contact us.
    15. Acceptance Status Notification: Jurying begins on the 14th. Notification information is available March 17. New this year. Acceptance information is provided online. The Entry  Number and a Security Login Code(from the Entry Form email) are used to open a page on our website to see which artwork was accepted or not accepted. Please contact us if you cannot access your online Notification by March 18.

    16. The jury and judges’ decisions are final.
    17. Artwork Pickup
      If your work is not accepted or sold, it will be stored at the Museum. We cannot accommodate pick-ups on opening day, or after the Museum closes for the day. See the sidebar for Museum hours.
      Unless special arrangements have been made with Teresa at 519 238-1155, any work remaining after May 5, 2019 at 5 pm becomes the property of the Grand Bend Art Centre.
    18. Paint Ontario, Grand Bend Art Centre and Lambton Heritage Museum shall NOT be responsible for loss of or damage to any artwork, no matter what the cause.
    19. Entering this competition automatically constitutes your acceptance of these Terms and Conditions.

Last day for intake of artwork entered on line without image upload at the Museum. The museum closes at 5 pm. Artwork reception closes at 4 pm.

Sunday March 17th
Last day for the Paint Ontario Team to contact artists about acceptance.

Friday March 22nd – 4 pm
Last day to deliver artwork that was accepted in online with images jurying.

Friday March 29th
OPENING 4 to 9 pm
Awards presentation at 7 pm.

Saturday March 30th
Exhibition and sale open to public
10 am to 5 pm daily.

Update Your Artist’s Bio

Many visitors and potential purchasers at the show ask for information about artists. The Art Centre staff maintain a binder with this information, however it is up to each artist to maintain an updated biography. It can be as plain or fancy as you like but no hand written pages please. An 8.5″x11″ hard copy can be dropped off when you deliver your artwork or emailed to
